Hamilton, ON (April 13, 2015) – We are pleased to announce that Dr. Laurence Mussio, one of our very own professors from the Department of Communication Studies and Multimedia (CSMM), is the 2015 Recipient of the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA) Award for Teaching Excellence.
Dr. Mussio, a professor who has been with the CSMM Department since its advent and an integral part of the program’s success, was recognized for his teaching excellence by the students of McMaster University.
“Any award or honour is a flag of virtue,” stated Dr. Mussio. “If that is true, an award like this is less about a person than the specific qualities the nominators want people to emulate.”
The OUSA Award recognizes educators who excel at engaging individuals in the learning experience and sparks their desire to learn. A professor who is granted the Award for Teaching Excellence helps students develop the thinking and learning skills that form the foundation of a high quality educational experience.
Every year, only one professor from each university in Ontario is given the Award for Teaching Excellence. The OUSA Award is granted to a professor based entirely on student nominations.
“The students who nominated me and the ones who chose me for this award are sending a message about what they value most, what makes a difference to them in their lives: connection, compassion, engagement, excellence.”
McMaster University bases itself upon President Patrick Deane’s Forward with Integrity – a message that states the quality of the undergraduate experience is a top priority to this institution. The decision to select Dr. Mussio for the Award for Teaching Excellence falls completely in line with McMaster’s main message.
“It is always gratifying to see our dedicated faculty recognized for their commitment to students and to shaping an engaging and distinctive student experience, as outlined in Forward with Integrity,” said Patrick Deane.

On April 9, Dr. Mussio attended the OUSA Award Banquet to accept this award in person. He was joined by Katrina Owens, Vice President of Professional Development of the CSMM Student Society, and executive representatives from the McMaster Students Union (MSU).
“I accept the award with great pride, but also understand that is not mainly about me,” stated Dr. Mussio. “This award is a clear message to the department and to the faculty. The students are saying something significant about what they value the most about their formation at McMaster.”
“Being familiar with his scholarly achievements in Canadian business history, I am delighted to hear of Dr. Mussio’s teaching award,” says long-time friend and former McMaster Chancellor Lynton R. Wilson.
Besides being a mentor to students, Mussio has also inspired many of his colleagues in the communication studies department.
“Every year teaching in CSMM with Laurence Mussio, I meet new students talking in awe about this remarkable professor who has the most disarming sense of humour,” says Associate Professor Dr. Philip Savage.
“For them, and for me, it has been a great pleasure to work and learn from one of the best teachers I have met in my university career at McMaster University or indeed any educational institution I have been associated with,” says Dr. Savage.
The CSMM community and the students especially should feel honoured by this news. This Award was granted to one of our very own professors due to the students’ powerful voice and presence.
